Penn State's Milton S. Hershey Medical Center opened its doors to the first class of medical students in 1967 and became the first medical school in the nation to establish a Department of Humanities, introducing humanistic disciplines into the required medical curriculum. The College of Medicine was also the first to start an independent Department of Family and Community Medicine. From its beginning, medical education and patient care have been guided by the institution's commitment to provide humane, compassionate, and expert care.
The 550-acre campus is located in the rolling hills of southeastern Pennsylvania near the state capital, Harrisburg. The main facility houses the College of Medicine, the 500+ bed University Hospital and Children's Hospital, the Rehabilitation Center, the Biomedical Research Building, and the Emergency Medical Center. The hospital serves as the only regional Level I Trauma Center.
