The Marshall University School of Medicine was developed under the Veterans Administration Medical Assistance and Health Training Act passed by Congress in 1972. The School of Medicine was granted full accreditation and graduated its first class in 1981. The School of Medicine is a community-based program. The school's many affiliations provide the opportunity to experience medical practice in varied settings: a $32 million ambulatory care center, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, successful rural clinics, highly specialized tertiary-care services in community hospitals, offices of private physicians, and others. Students' educational opportunities are further enhanced by three recently opened facilities: the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology Science Center and the Byrd Clinical Center, which contains a Clinical Skills Lab.
