Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Description: Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine (RVUCOM) is a medical school granting a osteopathic medical degree located in Parker, Colorado near Denver. The school is currently in the process of admitting its first class of medical students who will begin classes in the Fall of 2008.
The accreditation of RVUCOM generated controversy before the school held its first class. Like all osteopathic medical schools, RVUCOM is accredited by a board of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Unlike the other 28 DO (osteopathic) and 126 MD medical colleges in the US, RVUCOM is organized as a for-profit corporation. Critics claimed the AOA's approval of a for-profit school "erodes creditability" of osteopathic medical schools, especially in comparison to their MD counterparts. The Liaison Committee on Medical Education, which accredits the MD-granting US medical schools, has banned for-profit schools. Concerns were raised about the close ties of the RVU's founder and chancellor, Yife Tien to the American University of the Caribbean, a for-profit medical school located outside the U.S. but attended by primarily U.S. citizens. School officials insist the for-profit status of the school will not compromise the integrity of its educational mission. AOA president Peter Ajluni responded, "there are many socially minded for-profit companies that contribute time, resources, and profits to their communities" and "for-profit institutions like RVUCOM can further the cause of osteopathic medicine in the United States."

RVUCOM is not a school I would attend. The professors cannot even post lecture notes on time. Students are dirlled for eight hours a day with solid powerpoint- with the occasional lab. They really need to lecture using whiteboards.
The administration has been deceptive. They promised a small student recreation center upstairs and then rescinded that offer. They also promised a student clinic but so far it hasn't been operational. One student was sent straight to the dean's office and was chewed out for two hours because she didn't fill out her name correctly on the first test. This is not the attitude I would want demonstrated by my d.o. to a patient.
They also told us they would be receptive to student feedback but so far have really told students tough luck. Most of our enthusiasm is killed for being doctors.
If you choose to go here, know that RVU doesn't have full accreditation yet, so you cannot transfer to another institution if you are unhappy. Because of this, as of now you also have no guarantee of graduating with a medical degree. They should offer a M.A. program as of now to get fully licensed, but this won't happen.
So, be weary if you go here. They are a brand new school that is trying too hard to gain a reputation. Like most schools, you will be overworked. But, at RVU you have eight hours of class and then are expected to study. I'd consider another school until they become more student-friendly.
