Founded in 1985, the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine is a private school offering first-rate research facilities, hospital and med programs, and externships. It was the first podiatric medical college to be part of a major university and the program has graduated more than 900 podiatric physicians since its inception. The podiatric school opened a Foot and Ankle Institute at Bay Harbor Islands in July of 2007. This institute provides general and specialized podiatric care and training for podiatric medical students and residents. The school is affiliated with the following hospitals as: DVA Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and Mercy Hospital. The program has one of the lowest average class sizes (roughly 60/class) among podiatric medical programs in the U.S. offering individualized instruction within the context of a larger, university environment. Barry also has the highest percentage of women and minority students of any podiatric med school in the nation. For eight consecutive years, U.S. News and World Report ranked Barry first for diversity among regional universities in the South. Barry was federally designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution in May 2006.
