New York College of Podiatric Medicine

Description:

The New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) is the oldest and largest college of podiatric medicine in the U.S. Through melding diverse clinical training - within the world’s largest foot care clinic - with first-rate classroom instruction, New York College of Podiatric Medicine has been at the vanguard of podiatric medical education for greater than 96 years.

By 1911, the New York School of Chiropody had been created, committed to the education and training of chiropodists. Dr. Maurice Lewi, a pioneer and educational activist, devised the first piece of legislation governing the practice of chiropody. He proceeded to suggest that the term chiropody be changed to podiatry (more appropriately named with regard to the root meaning). The term podiatry was then adopted by other schools of podiatric medicine and by the American Podiatric Medical Association.

In 1972, the school was given its current name, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. Podiatric med students have a unique opportunity to work within the Foot Clinics of New York facility – the biggest podiatric center worldwide. The school is also affiliated with the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, Lincoln Hospital, Metropolitan Hospital Medical Center, Harlem Hospital, and the New York Presbyterian Healthcare System. Students also have the option to take on senior externships at 160 affiliated hospitals nationwide. NYCPM students also benefit from the attending school in a culturally diverse and stimulating city.
