Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine

Description:

The Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) is a post-baccalaureate professional medical college in Blacksburg, Virginia. VCOM is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains.

VCOM is a non-profit, private corporation initially funded through several foundations that were established by the late Marion Bradley Via. Edward Via was instrumental in dedicating funds to this initiative. John Rocovich, the Via attorney, served as the Rector for Virginia Tech during the time VCOM was founded and was the individual instrumental in founding the college. The vision for the College was to provide healthcare for Southwest Virginia and the Appalachian region, and to promote biomedical research with Virginia Tech.

VCOM operates with a collaborative agreement with Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and is located in Virginia Tech's Corporate Research Center. This collaboration creates an environment that promotes excellence in education and research.

Osteopathic Medicine
The College offers the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree. Osteopathic physicians are licensed in every state to practice the full scope of medicine including examining patients, diagnosing illness, writing prescriptions, performing surgery, as well as providing musculoskeletal manipulation. Osteopathic physicians enter every field of medicine from family practice to neurosurgery. The majority of osteopathic physicians, however, practice primary care, with approximately one-fourth of the profession providing care in small communities and rural areas.
