The School of Medicine was founded in 1846 by Millard Fillmore and a group of physicians. In 1962 the University of Buffalo joined the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The University at Buffalo has the most comprehensive campus in the SUNY system and was honored in 1989 with election to the Association of American Universities. The clinical education program is conducted in cooperation with nine area hospitals.
The medical school is located on a recently renovated 33-acre campus on Main Street, in the notheast corner of the city of Buffalo. The world-renowned Shock Trauma Center is located two miles from the main medical school building. There are several public parks, cultural institutions, and shopping areas located in the vicinity. The "Main Street Campus" is accessible by subway to downtown Buffalo and is within walking distance of the VA Medical Center.
