The School of Medicine was established in 1879 and expanded to a four-year school in 1952. Other schools of health sciences are adjacent, allowing easy interaction and collaboration. The School of Medicine is continuing a major expansion and renovation of teaching and clinical facilities. Among other projects, three hosptials, Womsen's, Children's, and Neuroscience recently have been completed, and the North Carolina Cancer Hospital will be completed in 2009. Additional educational and clinical facilities are available throughout the State in Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) established in 1972 to provide clinical experiences and educational opportunitites in community settings.
