The School of Medicine was established in 1905 as a basic science public medical school. In 1973, legislative action created an expanded curriculum and, in 1981, a full four-year medical education program was instituted in the state. The school is university-based and community-integrated.
The medical school is located on the University of North Dakota campus, a state-supported institution located in Grand Forks in the heart of the Red River Valley. The Grand Forks-East Grand Forks (MN) community has a total population of approximately 75,000. UND is a Carnegie Doctoral II institution, offering a wide diversity of educational programs.
